O dia do Vinho do Porto em Portugal

Hoje celebra-se o Vinho do Porto, numa data que evoca um momento decisivo da história do Douro.

Sim, foi a 10 de setembro de 1756 que, por alvará régio de D. José I e sob a ação do Marquês de Pombal, foi criada a Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, marco fundador da Região Demarcada do Douro e ponto de partida para a organização e demarcação de uma das mais antigas e emblemáticas regiões vitivinícolas do mundo.

É precisamente esta data que o IVDP escolheu para assinalar o Port Wine Day, celebração oficialmente instituída em 2014. Em 2026, o dia assume um significado ainda mais especial, ao marcar os 270 anos da Região Demarcada do Douro.

Há, contudo, uma segunda data associada à celebração do Vinho do Porto. A 27 de janeiro assinala-se internacionalmente o International Port Wine Day, criado em 2012 pelo Center for Wine Origins, organismo sediado nos Estados Unidos e ligado à defesa e promoção das denominações de origem. Ao contrário de 10 de setembro, esta data não está associada a um acontecimento histórico específico do Douro, tendo sobretudo uma dimensão internacional de promoção do Vinho do Porto.

O Vinho do Porto tornou-se muito mais do que um vinho. É património, identidade, comércio, tradição e memória de um território moldado pela vinha e pelo trabalho de gerações.  

Cresceu entre socalcos, quintas, caves, vindimas e famílias que, geração em geração, ajudaram a construir a sua história, atravessando fronteiras e levando consigo o nome de uma região e a identidade de um país.

Hoje, celebramos o Douro, a sua história e um vinho que levou o nome de Portugal pelo mundo.

Um brinde, naturalmente, com Vinho do Porto!

The day of Port Wine in Portugal

Today we celebrate Port Wine, on a date that evokes a pivotal moment in the history of the Douro.

Yes, it was on September 10, 1756, that, by royal decree of King D. José I and under the action of the Marquês de Pombal, the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro was created, a founding mark of the Demarcated Region of the Douro and a starting point for the organization and demarcation of one of the oldest and most emblematic wine-producing regions in the world.

It is precisely this date that the IVDP has chosen to mark the Port Wine Day, a celebration officially instituted in 2014. In 2026, the day assumes an even more special significance, marking the 270 years of the Demarcated Region of the Douro.

However, there is a second date associated with the celebration of Port Wine. January 27 marks internationally the International Port Wine Day, created in 2012 by the Center for Wine Origins, an organization based in the United States and linked to the defense and promotion of designations of origin. Unlike September 10, this date is not associated with a specific historical event of the Douro, but rather has an international dimension of promoting Port Wine.

Port Wine has become much more than just a wine. It is a heritage, identity, commerce, tradition, and memory of a territory shaped by the vine and the work of generations.  

It grew between terraces, estates, cellars, harvests, and families that, generation after generation, helped build its history, crossing borders and taking with them the name of a region and the identity of a country.

Today, we celebrate the Douro, its history, and a wine that took the name of Portugal around the world.
